Her
Story
Became
Ours!
She was our mother and grandmother. We watched her sometimes slowly and other times, so quickly deteriorate. It was like shedding layers of clothing as she became a shell of the woman that she once was. We literally had to periodically weed out her clothing as her size dropped and downsize everything else in order to place emphasis on her care. One thing we were determined to do was to ensure that every single day she knew she was loved, through the level of care we were committed to providing her from the comfort of her own home. It was not easy…but love prevailed and we became her biggest advocates.

Knowing what to advocate for and who to advocate to can be rather tricky. But when it comes to ensuring the quality of care for those we love, there is always a way. It often means finding your voice or leveraging voices willing to stand with you. Elaine is the reason why this arm of care exists. When mom got sick, I wish I knew then what I know now. I wish some around us were not in denial. I wish, and wish and wish and can go on and on; but the point is, that knowledge is power, advocacy is strength, and love has the will to determine the quality of care we ultimately offer to the people who once invested in and loved us.
The Discover with CoCo Company clearly understands that power of love and recognizes the role even gratitude played in helping us to cope and heal. Dementia severely impacted our lives when Elaine battled with bleeding on the brain because of vascular dementia. Our lives shifted and it took a lot of love and dedication to care to get us through her last 13-years. We learnt a lot of lessens on the challenges of finding good nursing homes, the need for self-advocacy, and the potential that does exist to manage care from a patient’s own home; allowing them to be surrounded by those who love them and can be readily present to oversee their care.

Under the auspices of the work, we recognize that the lessons we learned along the way can become an asset for strangers and friends alike. Our goal is to help families better navigate and establish the best approaches to family care, because it can be done. We did it! We made sure that our mom and grandmother was given optimal care from home after realizing that being at home was indeed the best thing for her and for us. We wanted to be in closer proximity to her each day. We wanted the liberty to step into her room to let her know that we would always be there and that we cared. We wanted to determine her diet and care. We wanted to try to make her smile each day. And when she no longer smiled, we felt assured that she still knew she was always surrounded by love.

Navigating services is not an easy feat for families already devastated by the onset and impacts of this disease. It becomes an added personal burden to carry as you try to do your best to determine care while trying to simply focus on your loved one. It often takes a village and I found that sometimes you would need to create that village. We are happy to be your village and support you in determining care and best ways to move forward in the best interest of you, your family, and your loved one. The greatest community we can build is one that is centered around love. That is what we promote and offer here at the Discover with CoCo Company. We should never forget our aging population who has already given so much to us. It is projected that dementia will become a leading health disease that our nation will have to deal with, and we believe it is essential to educate our families as best as we can. We are willing to listen and share with you what we have learned and what you may wish to consider as you aim to manage your family member’s care.

Contact us for a one-on-one, one hour consultation via Zoom and a potential for in-person if needed: $125.00. This consultation gives us an opportunity to get to know you and hear about your family member and their healthcare needs. We will share with you some our lived experiences and provide you with some recommendation for how you too can move forward with care.

For us, this is an opportunity to ensure we offer love and kindness beginning at birth and seeing it through to the grave.
